SPREAD project’s partnership was created in the spirit of preserving Claudio Abbado’s initiatives for young musicians, which include the “Fondazione Gustav Mahler – musica e gioventù” as the organizer of “Mahler Academy” (Bolzano/Bozen, IT) and the “Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester” (Vienna, AT).
Further partners are “The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras Limited” – which includes the ensembles “English Baroque Soloists” and “Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique” (London, UK) and “Ostfriesische Landschaft” for “die Gezeitenkonzerte” (Aurich, DE).
The project SPREAD seeks to connect the different activities of the Fondazione Gustav Mahler (Lead Partner), The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras Limited , the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and Ostfriesische Landschaft, to establish a network for training young musicians to become the best professional orchestra musicians of the future.
The project provides activities, such as individual lessons, chamber music, chamber orchestra and large symphony orchestra, as well as shared performances between the young musicians and their coaches in order to create an ideal and very close cooperation of teacher and student.
In the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester the young musicians experience orchestral playing in grand ymphonic repertoire, coached by members of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, amongst others, and lead by the world’s elite of conductors.
The Academy’s special teaching structure provides a unique way for a selection of these young musicians to adequately explore different musical styles: musicians of international fame – who are soloists, play in some of
Europe’s most formidable ensembles and teach at the leading conservatories of the continent – hold master classes and rehearse/perform chamber music together with the students.
For the very specialized work on baroque and classical repertoire, as well as on romantic repertoire under the aspect of performance practice, key players of The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras Limited, who are the leading specialists in this field, teach individual lessons and chamber music.
Stylistic diversity is becoming ever more important in the music world and so students who join the project have the possibility to learn this from the best. Some musicians might be chosen at the discretion of Sir John Eliot Gardiner to take part in some prestigious professional activities as part of the Monteverdi Apprenticeship Program.
Several of the Mahler Academy’s chamber music ensembles will be invited to travel to the North of Germany and perform at the “die Gezeitenkonzerte” Festival, in order to give the young musicians performing possibilities beyond the Mahler Academy, with concrete opportunities to enter working contexts.
Thanks to the different experiences and fields of expertise that each partner brings to this collaboration the project offers a unique and diverse experience and involves at least three of the five key targets set by Europe until 2020: employment, education and social inclusion.
The aim of SPREAD project is the creation of a network of musical institutions, which will provide an excellent and extremely diverse form of high musical education and performances.
